Photo exhibition: our top pick for 2021

Following several months of shutdown, cultural venues reopen. For the occasion, we have come up with a list of our favorite photo exhibitions of 2021.

1. Family Affairs, Family in current photography – Hamburg (DE)

The family has always been a key subject of photography, both in personal and artistic series. The work of more than 20 international photographers has been assembled for this exhibition, presenting various photographic and artistic approaches to that topic. Their photographs reveals the wide range of family models, roles and dynamics across the globe while breaking through intimate moments and feelings one shares within their own family.

2. Willy Spiller, New-York 1977-1985 – Zürich (CH)

Swiss photographer Willy Spiller is known for using techniques of both fine art and documentary photography in order to capture the beauty of everyday life.

From the late 70’s until the mid-80s, the period during which he lived in New York and Los Angeles, Spiller revealed, through his lens, many facets of the energy and vibrance prevailing at the time. The series showcases fascinating and diverse scenes, from the hip-hop culture or the subway lines in New York to the Los Angeles’ high society lifestyle.

2. Willy Spiller, New-York 1977-1985 – Zürich (CH)

The annual World Press Photo Exhibition is the largest and most prestigious international press photo competition. Each year, press photographers are invited to participate, submitting their top news-related pictures from previous year. The 200 award-winning visuals give an overview of the key events and news that happened around the globe while providing an insight on how press photographers tackle their work. The exhibition is traditionally first held in the 15th-century church De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam, before being showcased around the world.

4. The new women behind the camera – New York (US)

The global phenomenon of the New Woman, which first emerged in the United-States in the 1920s, stood for empowerment, greater freedom and independence of women. This groundbreaking exhibition presents the work of more than 120 women photographer from over 20 countries, who embodied this movement and embraced photography from the 1920s through the 1950s. Their way of shooting as well as their photographs reflect the social, cultural and political transformations that shaped the era. The exhibition not only aims to highlight woman innovative work in various photography fields (art, fashion, advertising, photojournalism etc.) but also seeks to reevaluate the history of photography.

5. Henri Cartier-Bresson, Le Grand Jeu – Paris (FR)

BnF heritage curator Sylvie Aubenas, writer Javier Cercas, photographer Annie Leibovitz, collector François Pinault and director Wim Wenders have individually made a selection  of photographs from Henri Cartier-Bresson’s Master Collection, 385 pictures that the photographer considered to be the most representative of his work. This exhibition is a great opportunity to (re)discover aspects of the so-called “Eye of the Century”, through the lens of these five different curators, all of whom have a strong connection to photography.
