4 reasons why you should start shooting in 4K

HD, UHD, 4K and 8K are image formats defined by different numbers of pixels and frames per second.

  • 8K: 8.192 pixels wide and 4.320 pixels high ;
  • 4K: 4.096 pixels wide and 2.160 pixels high ;
  • Ultra HD: 3.840 pixels wide and 2.160 pixels high;
  • Full HD: 1.920 pixels wide and 1.080 pixels high;
  • HD: 1.080 pixels wide and 720 pixels high.

Some consumer cameras and high-end smartphones shoot in Ultra HD (3.840 x 2.160 pixels). Although UHD is very close to 4K, manufactures rather use the term 4K for marketing reasons.

You can stabilize your footage in post-production

It’s always better to hold your camera still or to use, but sometimes it is just not possible. This is where software stabilization comes into play. For 1080p productions, a source video shot in 4K will result in software-stabilized footage without any loss in image quality. Thanks to 4K, the shot can be easily stabilized. Most of the time, this requires the software to slightly crop the image.
