Photographer Jacques Joffre, Doctor of Science, is a former teacher and researcher at the École Nationale de Chimie of Montpellier. In 1973, when he was a lecturer at the University of Rabat in Morocco, Jacques Joffre took on color photography as a hobby. In 1977, he won his first photo contest and hit the headline of the English magazine Photography, thanks to a photograph shot in the beautiful city of Chefchaouen. Thereafter, his work is published in many magazines such as Zoom, Photo Magazine, Chasseur d’Images, Express, the Nouvel Observateur or Atlas.

The concept of the “decisive moment” was made famous by photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. It encompasses the idea of a scene’s spontaneity together with the intuition of the photographer. Jacques Joffre’s photographs are much in the same vein. He strives to capture the life and emotion of a given moment.

“I like to sublimate the subject that I photograph. I am looking for a smile, a movement, an expression that will not leave us indifferent.”

Jacques Joffre decided to conduct research to overcome the constraints related to the exposure of light in high contrasted scenes. He co-founded Photomatix in 2002, which has become a worldwide reference in the HDR field. HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a digital technique that uses several levels of light exposure to exploit the full dynamic range of a scene. In 2012, he developed a new piece of software, HDRinstant, the only one, to date, that creates HDR photographs of moving subjects, thanks to the use of a video.

From the colorful photographs shot in Morocco to those captured from a video and processed in HDR, this exhibition is an opportunity to discover the rich diversity of Jacques Joffre’s portfolio.
