FAQ

What is HDRinstant ?
HDRinstant is a brand new program that allows you to choose your favorite moment from your video and using the neighboring frames, create an HDR image or an improved still. It uses a technique called lucky imaging. The software first applies a morphing algorithm which removes motion blur and ghosting. It then stacks the images selected from your video in order to improve the signal to noise ratio. The user then chooses their preferred tone-mapping parameters allowing beautiful colors and stunning detail to be displayed. The software works particularly well when you have a scene with difficult light conditions such as a sunset. HDRinstant also works with a set of burst images.
High Dynamic Range (HDR)
What is HDR ?
HDR or High Dynamic Range is a digital photography technique aimed at making an image appear much closer to what the human eye sees as opposed to what the camera’s sensor allows. The resulting images have a wider range of tonal values than a classical image.

What is dynamic range ?
The dynamic range (DR) is the ratio between the maximum and minimum values of a physical measurement. Its definition depends on what the (DR) refers to. In photography, cameras, scenes, displays and images each have their own dynamic range.
When the scene’s DR exceeds the camera’s DR, highlights are washed out and shadows turn into black patches. Every camera has a fixed DR and will only capture a limited amount of shadow and highlight information. So when photographers expose for dark areas, the highlights such as clouds will be washed out. Inversely, exposing for the highlights will leave a lot of dark patches.
What is Lucky Imaging ?
Lucky Imaging is a new imaging technique that uses multiple short exposes to capture your subject. It is mainly used in astrophotography but it is perfect for everyday use.

Oftentimes, a photographer will miss a special moment (the decisive moment). Lucky imaging means that you can choose your decisive moment! Instead of taking simple photographs, Lucky Imaging uses video and most cameras can nowadays film at 30 to 60 images per second. The large number of images means that you can choose your favorite instant (and you won’t miss it).

Lucky Imaging also uses image stacking which really improves the quality of your final picture.

  • Tagged Image File Format – .tif (8/16bits)

Can I get a Preview of My HDR Image?
For the time being, HDRinstant only offers a preview of your final tone-mapped image. If you are creating an HDR image, you need to extract and stack your frames beforehand.
Creating HDR images
My image is taking a long time to process
When creating an HDR image, HDRinstant needs multiple frames (either extracted from video or from a burst mode series). Processing time can vary depending on the following factors:
  • Resolution of your input video
  • Number of images used
  • Image quality
  • Selected parameters (especially the anti-ghosting power parameter)

Increasing any of these parameters will increases the processing time.

My final image shows large pixels
It is likely that you have chosen the “fast” option for quality. We only recommend this option to get an idea of what your final HDR image will look like.

My HDR image appears blurry /contains ghosts
HDRinstant has a tool called anti-ghosting power that allows the user to reduce ghosting that HDR images tend to have (when there are moving subjects). We recommend two things to reduce ghosting.
  1. If your scene contains little movement - select about 16-20 images and set the antighosting power to auto. If you still have ghosting, increase this setting or reduce the number of images selected.
  2. If your scene contains moderate movement – Reduce the number of images that you have selected for extraction and set antighosting to at least 3

My HDR image appears noisy
HDRinstant uses underexposed images or video frames to create HDR images (when shooting, the photographer should expose for the highlights – see the “Shooting advice” section of our FAQ). HDRinstant then uses multiple frames and stacks them to obtain better detail in the darker areas of the image. The more images are stacked, the more efficient the noise reduction process will be. Some black areas may be too dark (not enough data) to allow for efficient noise reduction.

I Installed The Plug-in But I Can’t Find It In Lightroom?
Restart Lightroom after installing HDRinstant. If it is still not there, you will have to add it manually. To go “File->Plug-in Manager” In the opened dialog box, click the “Add” button and select the folder where the plug-in is installed, usually under the folder name: “HDRinstant.lrplugin”.
Default locations of the installations: For Windows: “C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Modules” For Mac: “/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Modules”

I Have Purchased A License Key, How Do I Activate The Full Version Of HDRinstant?
In Lightroom, click “File->Plug-in Manager”. Select the HDRinstant plug-in in the list on the left. Then at the top of the window, click on “Register HDRinstant”.

Do I Have To Buy A New License If I Reinstall Lightroom, or Upgrade It To The Next Version?
No. After reinstalling Lightroom and HDRinstant, simply re-enter your License key.

How Will HDRinstant Be Updated To The Latest Version?
HDRinstant will automatically check if a new version is available online. If a new version is available, you will be prompted to download the update. You will not have to register again your license key however.

What Is Your Upgrade Policy?
Each new license purchased comes with free upgrades for the period of one year from the date of purchase. All new updates released within the first year of your date of purchase will be upgraded free of charge. After this period, minor upgrades are still free but if there is a new version, a new license will need to be purchased.

Does The Image Preview Panel Display A Preview Of My HDR Image?
No. The image preview panel only shows the current selected image, not the effect being applied.

I Have Modified And Retouched An Image In Lightroom, Before Importing It Into HDRinstant. However, HDRinstant Does Not Show Any Modifications Made To The Images By Lightroom?
The HDRinstant plug-in is designed to read the original untouched image files stored on your hard drive, not the ones modified by Lightroom. Hence, it does not take into account any modifications made in Lightroom. For instance, if your original image is +0EV and, in Lightroom, you decrease the exposure to -2EV, HDRinstant will read and use the original image at +0EV. You can avoid this by exporting modified images, preferably in .tiff format, and then importing them back in Lightroom. Now, you can use the modified images in HDRinstant.
Error messages
I Got An Error While Extracting Images From A Video
The format of your video is probably not yet supported. It is advisable to export and convert your video to .mp4 using Lightroom. Then import this .mp4 video and you will be able to use it with the HDRinstant plug-in.
Another way to do it would be to import a series of images taken in burst mode.

I Got An Error While Importing Video To Lightroom
Solutions for all problems related to importing video files to Lightroom are provided here.

My antivirus software blocks HDRinstant
HDRinstant is 100% safe and doesn't contain any sort of virus. It is possible though that certain files be mistakenly considered malicious by some anti-virus programs, for example, the Avira antivirus software detects a library file called “DevIL.dll” as a threat. This file is necessary for HDRinstant to function properly, and like any other file from our software, it is in no way malicious..
The GoPro Hero3+ and Hero 4
The GoPro Hero3+ recently had a firmware update allowing you to underexposure your scene. We recommend the following settings to create an HDR photo

Scenes that have relatively little movement
If you have a scene that contains little movement, you can take advantage of the 4K. The relatively slow frame rate (15 fps) means that you may struggle with fast moving objects. You are of course free to try but if you are unable to get good results, it may be better to use a faster frame rate with a smaller resolution. Set the video resolution to 4K. The frame rate will automatically be set to 15fps. Set the exposure compensation between -1 and -2.0 depending on the lighting conditions. If you are not sure just set it to -1.5

Scenes that have moderate movement
If your scene contains more movement, you need to set the GoPro to capture more fps. We recommend the following settings:
  • Video resolution to 1440
  • Frame rate to 48 fps
  • Exposure compensation to between -1 and -2.0. If you are not sure, set it to -1.5
Error/Other Issues
Although we have eliminated most of the bugs in our software, we're still working to make it run faster and more efficiently. If you have any problems running the software, please contact our support team at (mailto:support@hdrlog.com).
